We would like to thank everyone who contributed time, money and/or effort to making the Honors At Arlington mission a total success. Without your support, we could not have gotten this mission accomplished. After twenty-five years and five previously unsuccessful attempts, according to Arlington National Cemetery staff, CPL Isaiah Mays in now interred where he belongs. Special thanks to FedEx Ground Corporation and Arizona Veterans Services Office for their extremely generous donations. To J.D. Hayworth for his outstanding support of Isaiah Mays and all veterans issues. To Christina Duwell, without whom none of this would have been possible in the first place. Christina single handedly took charge of and handled all legal matters enabling Isaiah to be exhumed. Again, to all involved, THANK YOU! |

CPL Mays is now in Arlington, but... For over 84 years, Medal of Honor recipient CPL Isaiah Mays was buried in an unmarked, obscure grave in an abandoned cemetery in the heart of downtown Phoenix, AZ. On May 29, 2009, CPL Mays was interred in Arlington National Cemetery with the appropriate military honors due a Medal of Honor recipient. For members of the Old Guard Riders, it was a sigh of relief and a mission accomplished....almost. When Old Guard Riders became involved with Isaiah Mays, we had to objectives: 1.) get CPL Mays interred in Arlington National Cemetery with appropriate military honors, and 2.) insure that a lasting tribute to CPL Mays and all of the Buffalo Soldiers stand within Wesley Bolin Memorial Park across from the Arizona State Capital. As one of only eight Medal of Honor recipients of the State of Arizona, it is only fitting that CPL Mays be given such a tribute. We have achieved our first objective. Now we begin work on our second objective, the lasting tribute to Isaiah Mays and the buffalo Soldiers.
The Isaiah Mays/Buffalo Soldier Monument
The above picture is a monument located within an Ohio rest area. It is dedicated to Ohio Dept. of Transportation personnel. It is simple, elegant and easily adaptable. The smaller monument would be dedicated to CPL Isaiah Mays and be engraved with his Medal of Honor citation. The larger monument would be dedicated to the "Buffalo Soldiers" of the 9th & 10th Cavalry and the 24th & 25th Infantry. Jointly, the Buffalo Soldier units had a total of nearly two dozen Medal of Honor recipients. "WE CAN, WE WILL" motto of Ninth Cavalry
